Festivalpreis „Best OFF“ Freie Theater Niedersachsen 2024
Nominated for "DER FAUST“ – German Theater Award 2023: Staging Dance
„…power for the people:
use your body… use your voice… make a choice…“
Bodily resistance and choreographed protests in public spaces have become effective and powerful means of peaceful demonstrations in capitalist democracies. Developed by queer feminist activists in the 1990s, so-called “radical cheerleading” combines non-violent, direct action with theatrical elements. Cheerleading is well known in the form of organized cheering groupies at sporting competitions. The makers of this performance use and subvert the codes of cheerleading to convey their own messages. Glamour, glitter and a mix of various slogans are the components of this joyful, satirical alternative to militant forms of protest.
With vehemence, precision and humour, the heterogeneous ensemble led by choreographer Zufit Simon, who also appears on stage, poses the question of what is worth taking to the streets for.

Aus der Nominierungsbegründung „DER FAUST“, Deutscher Theaterpreis 2023 – Inszenierung Tanz
Based on minimalist movement sequences and cheers, 'Radical Cheerleading' unfolds a complex, choreographic exploration of dance as an embodied form of protest. The dancers throw themselves into the fray passionately, persistently and with humor. An empowering evening about the strength and vulnerability of bodies that rhythmize and constantly regroup in order to stand up for something together.

[...] Simon’s fragmentation of principles, her repetition and re-contextualisation also apply to the use of the pompoms, which are waved so vigorously it’s a miracle they aren’t torn to shreds. Even the stereotypical cheerleader’s smile looks like a weapon when the five performers wear it like the Cheshire cat’s taunting grin. The visually stunning evening quickly develops an irresistible attraction [...]

[...] The choreographer is obviously fond of transforming the familiar into something indeterminately new: images that remain in the mind’s eye and a plea for protest culture that is certainly worth considering. [...]
